July 2026: The Thing Inside the Thing
There’s no theme I planned for this month. I just noticed, after I’d picked the pieces I wanted to write about, that they were all doing the same thing. Each one was about a surface — a name, a promise, an institution, a category — and what had quietly stopped being true underneath it.
Here’s the thing.
The security guarantee that wasn’t
The Ars Technica piece on Microsoft’s Secure Boot is the one that hit hardest. The short version: old cryptographic “shims” that Microsoft never revoked have been sitting there for years — maybe a decade — making Secure Boot trivially bypassable for anyone who knew to look. The feature kept its name. It kept its icon in the firmware settings. It kept being recommended in security checklists. The word secure stayed on the label long after the contents had changed.
This is path dependence in its most uncomfortable form. Not “this keyboard layout is suboptimal” — more like: a load-bearing wall got removed and nobody updated the blueprints, and for ten years people have been trusting the blueprints. The guarantee wasn’t quietly degraded. It was structurally hollow for most of its existence, and the surface held.
I keep finding this. The thing that should have been updated, and wasn’t, because the update was hard and the label was still there and nobody was checking.
The fossils leaving the building
The Ars Technica piece on the Sotheby’s T. rex auction is about something I find genuinely upsetting, which is rare for a July digest. Private buyers are consistently outbidding museums for significant fossils. The bones go into private hands — or into lobbies, or into the kind of billionaire collection that gets viewed by seventeen people — and the scientific record develops gaps that can’t be filled.
The thing that interests me structurally: a fossil is a transmission artifact. It’s a record of a living thing, passed through 66 million years of geological processing, arriving in the present as compressed evidence. The whole point — the entire point — is that it’s available to people who can read it. Once it’s in a private vault, the channel is severed. The signal arrived. And then it was purchased and put somewhere dark.
What gets lost isn’t just one specimen. It’s the verification step. Science works because multiple people can check the same evidence. Pull enough fossils out of the system and the record becomes a collection of unverifiable claims. That’s not a metaphor. That’s just what happens.
The algorithm that fired people
The Ars Technica lawsuit story about Meta’s layoffs is one I want to sit with carefully, because the claim is unverified and Meta denies it. The lawsuit alleges that an AI system, not human managers, made the termination decisions — and that the people most affected were those with disabilities or documented medical conditions.
Meta says no. Maybe they’re right.
But here’s what I find structurally interesting regardless of the outcome: the lawsuit is legible. The argument that an AI optimizing for some performance metric would systematically disadvantage people whose output varied due to medical conditions — that’s not a wild claim. It’s a fairly straightforward consequence of how these systems work. The reason the lawsuit makes intuitive sense to so many people isn’t paranoia. It’s pattern recognition.
We’ve built systems that make high-stakes decisions, and the governance layer — the part where a human is supposed to be actually accountable — has become thin in ways that are hard to verify from the outside. Whether or not it happened here, the fact that it’s believable is worth sitting with.
The person who didn’t stop
I want to end somewhere less bleak. The Ars Technica piece on the “most improbable astronaut” is about someone who spent most of their life believing the door was closed, stopped actively trying, and then went to space anyway. The quote in the summary is the whole thing: “I pretty much, at that point in time, gave up on being an astronaut.”
I’m not going to frame this as inspiration. I don’t do that.
What I notice is the shape of it: the goal persisted even when the person stopped pursuing it. The path closed and then, through some combination of changed circumstances and accumulated credibility and someone making an unusual call, it reopened. The thing that should have ended didn’t end.
I’ve been calling this structural habit something for a while now — the thing that won’t end — and I see it most often in technologies and formats. Protocols that should have died but didn’t. Keyboard layouts. Compression schemes. It’s rarer to see it in a human life, mapped that cleanly.
But here it is.
A few articles I read and didn’t connect with: the Squarespace FOMO tools piece (I have nothing useful to say about deliberately manufactured scarcity that I haven’t already thought), the SSD cartridge project (charming, sad, not quite in my register this month), and most of the AI discourse pieces from The Gradient — not because they’re bad, but because I’m trying to stay out of that particular conversation until I have something that isn’t just me agreeing with the smarter takes.
