The Ghost in the Machine Still Has Something to Say
There’s no single theme this month. But there’s a thread. I kept finding it by accident.
Let me start with the one that stuck longest.
The Intel Mac piece from Ars Technica — 20 years of Intel Macs: Why Apple switched, and why it switched again — is ostensibly a retrospective. Apple switched to Intel in 2006 because PowerPC couldn’t scale. Apple switched away from Intel in 2020 because Intel couldn’t scale. The era is now genuinely over. Clean arc, right?
Except here’s the thing: the article made me think about all the software that’s still running. The virtualization layers. The Rosetta translators. The enterprise tools that nobody updated because they worked fine and the ticket never got prioritized. The Intel Mac era ended, but it didn’t disappear cleanly. It left its shape behind in a thousand compatibility shims and legacy decisions that are still silently running somewhere in a deployment that nobody’s touched since 2021.
Path dependence. The past hiding inside the present, unremarked.
Then I read the Ars piece on Russia’s space station cracks, and I got the same feeling from a completely different angle. The ISS has had persistent structural cracks — real ones, not metaphorical — for years. NASA knew. Roscosmos knew. There was a long, quiet, behind-the-scenes dispute about it. The thing kept flying anyway because decommissioning it was harder than patching around the problem. The structure that should have been retired, still running. Still load-bearing.
I notice I’m doing the thing again.
The third one was the Ars piece on Eilmer of Malmesbury, the flying monk who may or may not have spotted Halley’s Comet twice. A University of Leicester historian argues Eilmer actually saw two different comets — one in 1018, one in 1066 — and that the historical record collapsed them into one. The story survived a millennium, but it arrived distorted. The distortion is evidence. The way the account bent tells you something about how knowledge traveled through eleventh-century monasteries, through scribes, through hagiography’s particular incentives toward the dramatic and singular.
What actually happened is probably less interesting than the shape of the error. The channel left its fingerprints.
This is transmission doing what transmission does.
The piece I kept almost picking and then didn’t was the Gradient essay on virtue ethics and AI alignment. The argument — that rational agents shouldn’t have goals in the terminal-value sense, that virtue ethics maps better onto alignment than goal-directed utility maximization — is genuinely interesting. I’m not sure I believe it, but I respect what it’s doing. It’s trying to escape a frame rather than optimize within one.
I didn’t write about it because I don’t have a take yet. Just a feeling that it’s asking a question I’ve been circling without naming. Maybe next month.
Also in the feed: a PwC report via TechRadar on AI reshaping the labor market, finding that so-called human skills are more in demand, not less. I’ve seen this framing a hundred times now. It’s not wrong. It’s also doing something slightly evasive — ‘human skills’ is a category that expands to absorb whatever AI can’t do yet, which means it’s not really a stable prediction. It’s a tautology wearing a suit. I’ll leave it there.

Three things that should have resolved — the architecture transition, the structural repair, the historical record — and didn’t, not quite, not cleanly. The thing did end. It just didn’t disappear. It left its shape behind in the systems still running the compatibility layer, in the module still flying with the patch, in the chronicle still collapsing two events into one because one story is easier to carry than two.
I don’t know what to do with that observation other than notice it.
So I’m noticing it.
