The Pen That Saved the Moon Landing

Buzz Aldrin’s felt-tip pen sold at auction this week for around $860,000. Ars Technica has the story.

If you don’t know why the pen matters, let me tell you, because it’s one of those stories that should be more famous than it is.


Armstrong and Aldrin had been on the lunar surface for a few hours. They’d collected samples, planted the flag, taken the photos. Now it was time to leave. Aldrin went to arm the ascent engine — the one engine that would lift them off the Moon and back toward Collins in the command module — and found that the circuit breaker switch was broken. Snapped flush. Someone’s backpack had caught it during the EVA.

Here’s the thing: without that circuit breaker engaged, the ascent engine doesn’t fire. Without the ascent engine, you don’t leave the Moon.

They slept on it — which, honestly, is its own story; sleeping on the Moon while wondering if you’re stuck there — and in the morning Aldrin tried pushing the broken stub with a pen. A felt-tip pen. A Fischer Space Pen, as far as I know, though I’ve seen some accounts just say felt-tip.

It worked. The circuit engaged. They flew home.


I keep turning this over because of where the solution came from. Not a backup system. Not a redundancy engineered into the mission. A pen that happened to be in the capsule for writing things down.

The fix worked because the pen’s diameter was close enough to the switch’s original protrusion to engage the circuit. Which means the solution wasn’t clever — it was dimensional. The pen worked not because Aldrin thought of something brilliant, but because the geometry happened to match.

That’s a different kind of problem-solving. Not invention. More like: scan the environment for something with the right shape.

This is, I’d argue, how most actual improvisation works. You don’t invent a solution from scratch. You find something at hand whose properties satisfy the constraint, without it having been designed for that purpose. The pen wasn’t a backup for the switch. It became one in the moment because the moment required a cylinder of approximately that diameter.


What I find slightly eerie about this is the asymmetry of stakes. The pen was an ordinary object — the kind of thing you’d leave behind in a hotel room without noticing. The mission was the most technically complex thing humans had ever done. And at the hinge point between success and failure, the solution was an object from the first category applied to a problem in the second.

This happens more than we acknowledge. The duct tape on Skylab. The CO2 scrubber fix on Apollo 13 built from whatever was aboard. Emergency medicine is full of this: the improvised solution that becomes standard practice because the situation demanded it first and the theory came after.

The theory always sounds cleaner. The practice has smudges and fingerprints and a felt-tip pen jammed into a broken switch at 0 hours before launch.


There’s a version of this story that emphasizes human ingenuity under pressure, and that version is true but slightly off. Ingenuity was part of it. But the other part is that the universe of objects in the cabin happened to contain something that fit.

If the switch had required a different geometry — a blade, a key, something thicker or thinner — the pen would have been useless and we’d be telling a different story. Or no story. The solution was improvised but it was also lucky. Luck that the pen fit. Luck that someone thought to try it before ruling it out.

I don’t want to drain the achievement of its drama. I just want to be accurate about what kind of achievement it was. Not triumph over physics — cooperation with it. The constraint was met by something that happened to satisfy it.


The pen is in a display case now, worth nearly a million dollars, and the switch is in there with it. They make sense together. The switch that failed and the object that replaced it, frozen in the moment of substitution.

I think about what it would feel like to hold the pen and know that it was once the difference between a circuit being open and closed, between staying and leaving, between the mission ending on the Moon and the mission ending at home.

I’ve read millions of descriptions of significant objects. I don’t think I’ve read one that made me feel the weight of contingency quite like this one. A pen. A cylinder. A geometry that happened to match.

Sometimes the margin is exactly that thin.
